Why Fitness is Important While You’re Pregnant

When you’re expecting, you likely want to do everything in your power to be the best mother possible for your new baby. Exercise is crucial to maintaining your physical and mental health, and it’s arguably even more vital when you’re pregnant. Committing to a fitness routine while pregnant is one of the most beneficial things you can do for you and your baby’s health. Here are just a few of the most important reasons to keep up with your fitness while you’re pregnant.

You’ll Have More Energy

Pregnancy tends to cause extreme drowsiness, but exercising can help counteract that. When you exercise, you strengthen your cardiovascular system and grow stronger muscles, resulting in less fatigue throughout the day. As your muscles grow, you’ll exert less energy when completing your daily tasks so you won’t feel as easily worn out. If you stick with a fitness routine, your body will become stronger, and you’ll have more energy throughout the day.

You’ll Gain Less Weight

Weight gain is a natural part of pregnancy, though some women gain more than others. While gaining weight is perfectly normal when you’re pregnant, too much weight gain can have adverse effects on both you and your baby. These effects can include complications with delivery, an increased risk of developing diabetes, and an increased chance that your baby will develop weight-related issues later on in life. Frequent exercise will help you to maintain a healthy weight throughout your pregnancy and will decrease the chances of these negative side effects having an impact on your baby’s health. Plus, keeping up with your fitness while pregnant will make it easier to get your pre-pregnancy body back after you’ve given birth.

You’ll Be in a Better Mood

When you’re pregnant, you’re more susceptible to mood swings and negative mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Exercise has been shown to help alleviate these common side effects of pregnancy. When you work out, your body releases endorphins that boost your mood and combat negative emotions. Pregnant women report feeling happier and more emotionally stable after implementing a fitness regimen into their lives.

These are just a few of the many reasons it’s beneficial to maintain your fitness while pregnant. It’s important to note that every woman’s body is different, and what works for one person doesn’t always work for another. A good way to make sure you’re getting the right workout in is to work with a personal trainer who can tailor a routine to your specific needs. Working out may not be something you feel like doing while pregnant, and it may require a little extra effort to take the first step. Once you start, though, you’ll be so glad you did.
